One of the greatest challenges in studying how people use information when making decisions is knowing exactly what information people have when making those decisions. The Dynamic Process Tracing Environment (DPTE) is a web-based software developed at the University of Iowa that allows researchers to study how people seek out information by placing them in an information environment that tracks exactly what information they choose to access and then records the decisions they make.
This talk will cover the basic tenets of information processing theory and how DPTE is allowing innovative research to study how people use information to make vote decisions during simulated elections. David Andersen is an assistant professor at Iowa State University.
His research focuses on how people learn about politics and political candidates, focusing on how psychological limitations on attention and memory can constrain our democratic process. He also studies the nations' governors and how the state-level executive functions differently than the president. His research has been published in the American Journal of Political Science, American Politics Research, and PS: Political Science. He also has a book with Gerald Pomper examining how the New York Times has reported on political campaigns and informed the public about candidates over its 150-year history.
